Hi!

How are you? It's been a while since last time I wrote a journal (half a decade!), but there's one deviantart-related topic that's been nagging me for a while, and I thought I would say "hello" to you, and speak up on the matter.

I've been wondering about the state of the deviantart's interest in fostering the traditional art, and of its representation in the Daily Deviation selections. To me, the picture has been getting more and more sad throughout the years, and now it seems that the deviantart captains don't even pretend to be interested in the traditional art anymore. I do not want to delve into the questions of the relations between the managements, the staff, and the gallery directors, which might be at play too, yet it is enough just to browse one week back through the DDs to realise the fact of this misproportion through simple numbers. So, well...

August 29th: 1 traditional art piece per 13 featured pieces,
August 28th: 0 / 11
August 27th: 1 / 13
August 26th: 0 / 11
August 25th: 1 / 14
August 24th: 0 / 11
August 23th: 1 / 11

Which makes 4 (four!) traditional art pieces featured amidst all 84 (eighty-four!) Daily Deviantion features in the past week.

If this is not something to call, at least, a misrepresentation, then I have no idea what else we would name a misrepresentation (or negligence) in these terms, as there are thousands of talented painters, printmakers, collage-artists, calligraphers, among other artists, who might feel that their voice here is getting more and more ignored and remains unheard. Perhaps, it makes them more active in the dedicated groups, in abundant private journal features and news features, but it is sad that only few from *the above* seem to appreciate this mode of creativity enough to reflect it in some way through *official* channels, features, events, community projects, etc. Perhaps, it does not sell the way digital art sells these days. Perhaps, no-one needs a painter in the film studio nor any video production of today. Or perhaps, I put too much importance to the Daily Deviations in general, when we can establish happy and thriving traditional art constellation of deviantart connections for ourselves to admire what we like, but for young artists the overall image of the Daily Deviation features might be an indicator of what kind of art is sought after in the decisive circles, and what kind of art the whole community here is about. I might be wrong, but eleven years ago, the staff used to put more effort in keeping it diverse via tools they do have to cultivate the diversity they claim to extoll. Perhaps, also poets, artisan crafts artists, costume-makers, sculptors feel the same way...

I also checked the "About" section to be sure if maybe I, by some coincidence or memory shortages (I'm getting old), didn't forget that we are solely digital art community (so maybe it's time to find another planet to make a mess on) – it seems that we are not, but the statistical facts show the contrary. I've been hoping for a truly "renaissance" kind of change here on deviantart, but it doesn't seem to be coming anytime soon.

Ok, let's do our job.

Last month arctoa, whom many of you know as a tireless community volunteer for the Abstract/Surreal gallery, asked me to take part in his series of weekly interview features known as Saturday Spotlight.

You can read it now in arctoa's journal here - arctoa.deviantart.com/journal/… - and I also encourage you to check the other volumes of the Saturday Spotlight features if you want to discover many more talented Abstract/Surreal artists, to learn about the way they see the world, and to delve into their musings on reality and art, and many things in between.

Please, take a look on the discussion about the rise of violent imagery: forum.deviantart.com/devart/ge… - which I think is a significant subject, and I encourage you to voice your opinion. I decided to share it, as for many years I've observed the same, and thus I share Liz's concerns about it.

You don't have to visit the certain corners of deviantART to experience what is talked about, it's enough to turn on tv, give a little thought to what is promoted in popculture, or just keep an eye on the Daily Deviations page, what I've been doing almost daily for years so far. And since some time I started to wonder what's going on - as rarely was there a time I haven't seen blood, mutilation, agression and overall dystopia (most of them displaying a complete lack of originality or a thoughtful message behind) being a considerable part of what is promoted there, not only as a reflection of current artistic 'interests', or 'trends', but also as a 'direction' for all of us who look and create. Someone may say that I should not bother, or that I am not forced to look at it. Of course, I may not bother, but it won't dispel my concerns nor answer the nagging questions and doubts that I have - and these concerns and questions are not limited to art, but much about the world I'm living in, or the world I would like to live in.

That's why I ask - do we really need even more of this in our life? Is it a kind of miraculous vitamine for our minds? Does really someone fail to realize that any concepts and ideas do not function in the ranges of their own semantic potential, but also, or especially by the circumstances and contextual frames they are presented in? For when this contextual frame is the category of distinction, success and popularity - there's always a factor of conscious choice involved on the side of a director/administrator, which influences the ones who respond by following, and the focus on success, like it or not, happens to be blinding.

I do not have that much problem with what is expressed somewhere there in the name of the freedom of expression, but I have serious problem with what is selected out and promoted there by those who have the choice, and I do not understand the turn I observe in their choices. While I'm not going to judge the art itself, as I cannot say that the sole freedom to express can be good or bad, or that having a choice can be good or bad, I still can evaluate a particular choice and express my opinion on it, and I think the time has come for me to do so.

Not being an advocate of censorship and clear-cut limitations, especially in the case of artistic expression, what I try to encourage is *thinking*, because it always best when a particular choice comes from inside, not being forced from outside. I'm also not going to lead any crowds onto barricades with this journal, I just would like you to stop and ponder for a while on this subject, and if there comes an action, I will be more than happy - and by the action I mean as little (or as much) as commenting, spreading the word, or taking a stand, because I believe that best solutions flourish from sole awareness, respect and understanding.

The community of deviantART's collage artists knows very well who really deals the cards here - for those unfamiliar, these are the collages made in collaboration with LizCohn as part of the Playing with a Full Deck mail-art collab started by Liz in 2010, now counting more than a thousand playing card collages.
